Position Overview:

The Home Depot Canada is seeking a leader who is passionate about driving communication strategies that enhance the company’s reputation and brand positioning both externally and internally. As the leader of home improvement retail in Canada, this individual will be responsible for ongoing programming of the Public Relations and Executive Communications for the business.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and promote innovative products, capabilities, community investment initiatives, along with diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives throughout all business planning.
  • Provide counsel to internal business partners on the most effective public relations and executive communications strategies and tactics.
  • Responsible for the strategic communications planning, development, and execution of internal and external communication efforts involving the divisional president and the Canadian leadership team.
  • Build measurable strategic plans for earned, owned, and paid media that support business objectives, engaging multiple agency partners to deliver on said objectives.
  • Develop and execute proactive integrated public relations and influencer strategies.
  • Proactively identify emerging trends and issues, and coordinate the corporation’s communications responses and actions, internally and externally, with Canadian and US stakeholders.
  • Lead and support crisis communications with key stakeholders in Canada and the US.
  • Act as an official company spokesperson.

Partnering:

  • Establish clear performance criteria and objectives for all outside agencies.
  • Build relationships and facilitate deliverables with senior executives and associates within the organization; develop a deep understanding of the varied and complex communications needs of the business.

Team Leadership:

  • Manage a multi-disciplined team that includes public relations, executive communications, and digital design professionals.

Competencies:

  • Strong leadership ability
  • Proficient written and verbal skills
  • Issues management knowledge

Skills:

  • Understanding of strategic media relations and issues management policies, practices, and principles.
  • Experience working cross-functionally, specifically with communications, public relations, legal, government, and marketing teams.
  • Excellent strategic planning, organizational, problem-solving, and project management skills.
  • Superior communication skills and proven ability to influence stakeholders.
  • Experience developing and executing corporate communications and public relations strategies in a complex, fast-paced environment.
  • Strong writer with experience leading large-scale scriptwriting and speechwriting projects.
  • Experienced communications professional with excellent strategic, tactical communications, and reputation management skills.
  • Experience in supervising and coaching a team.

Direct Manager/Direct Reports:

  • Reports to Senior Director, Marketing.
  • Five associates report to this role.

Travel Requirements:

  • Role involves 20% travel within the U.S. and/or Canada.

Hybrid Work:

  • In-office three days weekly (Flex).

Working Conditions:

  • Corporate office environment.

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s Degree (BA) or equivalent in a related field.

Minimum Years of Work Experience:

  • Minimum 10+ years of experience in media relations, communications, or journalism.

Minimum Leadership Experience:

  • 2+ years of previous leadership experience.
  • Bilingual in French and English is an asset.

Certifications:

  • None.

Other Requirements/Assets:

  • Advanced capability in MS PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Must be available for any business emergencies outside traditional working hours.
